Madisonville is a small town in St. Tammany Parish with only about 700 residents as of the year 2000 and is only 2.4 square miles. It was founded in 1800 as Cocquille, and then renamed in 1810 after the president. It was an important port for New Orleans before the Civil War, and remained under Confederate control after. In 1848, the cemetery was given to a small group of citizens. Since then, it is not clear the ownership of the cemetery. The graves range from slave graves to Civil War soldier graves. The earliest date on a gravestone is 1800 and the most recents are after the year 2000.
